The sessions operate on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 2:00 PM- 6:00 PM.

Loaves and Fishes of Contra Costa offers a FREE 12-week basic introductory Culinary Arts program for applicants who are 16 and older. This training program teaches basic culinary skills needed to qualify as a candidate for a starting position within the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Industry. Training starts on October 3 2023- December 21 2023. Sign up now and be part of this year’s training program!!

The program includes training in the basics of a commercial kitchen, job retention and life skills led by our Chef Instructor Lavell Renfro. Our vision is to provide better preparation opportunities for people to obtain jobs that will lead to true careers and financial independence. Students will also be provided help in obtaining jobs in the culinary field. The success of the program will be based on how many students are placed in culinary positions and /or experienced an improved situation from
where they were when they entered the program. The class is not for someone who just wants to learn to cook, we are looking for impact results, such as job placement in the culinary industry.

Who can apply for this FREE training program?
Anyone age 16 and older can apply for this 12-week culinary program. Our target participant is interested in working in the Culinary and Hospitality Career Pathway, and is somehow experiencing some type of barrier to attending culinary school or getting employment on their own. Training location is located at 835 Ferry St, Martinez, CA 94553.

Goals of program

The yearly goal is to provide 16-30 students (4-6 students per session) with the experience of working in a commercial kitchen and then place at least 75% of the class in culinary jobs or somehow improve their situation. Students will complete the online work to receive their ServSafe CA food Handler’s Certificate required for working in a commercial kitchen.Each class will have some special opportunities outside of class depending on the time of year.
● Serve 1-2 community meals for a Loaves and Fishes Dining Room
● Provide a plated meal for family and friends at graduation ceremony.
● Participate in Loaves and Fishes fund raising events on and offsite.
● Catering opportunities may be available to some classes.
